I have a new favourite public house - and I've not even stopped there for a pint or a bite to eat.

The pub in question is The Swan in a village called Stratford St Mary, Suffolk. So why do I love it so much?

Well, they've just built a canoe and kayak-friendly 4m-wide jetty on the side of their picnic area which gives direct access onto the River Stour at one of my favourite parts of the river - heading towards Dedham and Flatford.

Previously, you had to try and get your boat down using some tiny stone steps. The new jetty is timbered and low enough on the water for easy entry and exit from your boat.

In their application to get their river jetty built, the pub said it was imperative more facilities for kayakers and canoeists were available for this beautiful stretch of river, made famous by John Constable. Now that's what I call a kayaker-friendly pub.

Hats off also to Geoffrey Davis, of the Bures-based River Stour Boating Company, who was agent for the proposal and Babergh District Council for giving the project the green light.

If you're ever in Stratford St Mary, please support this public house with your patronage as they're supporting us in our passion.
